The Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (ICIW) is a medium/minimum security prison located 25 miles east of Des Moines IA in Mitchellville IA ICIW provides educational and vocational services to offenders including Adult Basic Education, special education for eligible individuals, G.E.D., and Internal work assignments and vocational training courses provide vocational training opportunities.


Iowa Prison Industries also provides on-site vocational training. The institution emphasizes responsibility and accountability in preparing women o enders for successful Re-Entry to the community. Programs focus on interpersonal relationships, domestic violence, career assessment and exploration, self-esteem, parenting, substance abuse prevention, assessment, and referral program are licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health. The facility also houses an in-patient substance abuse treatment programs.

Iowa Correctional Facility for Women is one of the nine state prisons under the Iowa Department of Corrections. It is located at 420 Mill Street SW, Mitchellville, IA 50169, and is reachable by telephone at 515-725-5042.

This minimum and medium security state prison have approximately 238 sworn and support staff headed by a warden and assisted by a deputy warden, associate wardens, treatment director, and unit managers. They oversee an inmate population of about 888 female offenders in various stages of incarceration.

Iowa Correctional Facility Inmates

 

Iowa Department of Corrections takes female offenders through rigorous custody classification assessment and reassessment before placing them at the Iowa Correctional Facility for Women. Inmates at Iowa Correctional Facility for Women reside under the general population, special needs, therapeutic community, or administrative segregation. These are a combination of celled and dorm-like housing units.

Offenders identified with special needs by the Psychiatric Review Committee receive individual programs in the special needs living unit assignments. Likewise, the therapeutic community living units provide opportunities for offenders to confront and change their criminal behavior, thinking, and attitudes. And, administrative segregation includes offenders in disciplinary detention and protective custody.

Other inmate housing facilities at Iowa Correctional Facility for Women include a health care clinic, two dining halls, a gymnasium, education classrooms, a library, a hair care area, a craft room, and a Hi-Set testing center. And, there is a Minimum Live Out outside the secure perimeter for up to 120 offenders who are within 2 years of release from the state prison.

  • Narrow the search results by providing the inmate’s birth date, sex, offender number, location, offense, and county of commitment, if available

Inmate Privileges

 

In line with the mission of creating opportunities for safer communities, Iowa Correctional Facility for Women grants various inmate privileges geared towards facilitating their behavioral reforms. The inmate privileges are as detailed below:

Visitations

 

The state prison permits in-person and video social visits by family and friends. The in-person visits are scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am to 4 pm. Here, the state prison has 20 dedicated visiting stations where up to five visitors can meet an inmate for a 2-hour time slot.

Likewise, the video visitations are scheduled for Fridays and Mondays from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. Here, there are 5 dedicated GP stations and another 2 MLO stations to facilitate a 2-hour video visit.

The above visitation schedules apply to inmates under general population and administrative segregation. Offenders under disciplinary detention or a transitional program get one non-contact visit per week for 1 hour.

And, anyone wishing to participate in an upcoming in-person or video visitation session should apply to be included in the inmate’s approved members list. Then, the prospective visitor is to reserve their slot through the Ameelio App. Visit the state prison or call the Visiting Room Officer at (515) 725-5042 for details about special visits or manual scheduling of an in-person visit.

Correspondence

 

Offenders are allowed to send and receive mail from family and friends. Incoming mail should have the offender’s full name and number and exclude any fliers or advertisement materials. Also, the sender should write their return address on the back of the envelope. All mail is checked for contraband items before distribution to the inmates.

Second, inmates may make outgoing prepaid calls to their family and friends on the approved members’ list. Here, the state prison facilitates the 20-minute outgoing calls from 8 am to 9 pm. The call recipient is discouraged from redirecting the inmate calls via three-way calling, call waiting, or any other phone transfer method.

Commissary Accounts

 

Whereas cash and coins are contraband items at Iowa Correctional Facility for Women, the state prison allows each inmate access to money from friends and family via individual commissary accounts. Here, all monies collected from an offender during an arrest are deposited to the inmate’s commissary account or sent to a family member as per the inmate’s request. Then, family and friends may top up funds into the inmate’s commissary account by depositing funds using money orders, cashier’s checks, or cash deposits at the prison’s kiosk during an in-person visit. That way, the inmates shall have adequate funds to pay for their prepaid outgoing calls, postage stamps, stationery, medicine, electronics, and allowable hygiene products from the prison canteen.

Yard Privileges

 

All inmates are free to use the state prison yard in their free time, during daylight hours except when the weather is unfavorable. While there, the offenders are to stay at least 10 feet away from the perimeter wall. The yard shall remain closed during headcounts.
